To Survive Your First Year

Introduction
– 10 minutes
This will be an introduction to my background and how I
believe I can help the students. We will discuss my education in the fields of
Traditional Chinese Medicine, massage and sports medicine. Also the different
types of practices I have had over the years. This will help the student to
decide which type of practice they plan on seeking and how to get started. We
will discuss the basic premise of the class and what they can expect to learn
and touch on the headings of each lecture.
Finding Your Place In The World – 30 minutes
This lecture
will include how to find a location, city or area as a possible place to open
your practice. It will be an in depth look at evaluating an area including the
pluses and minuses of opening a practice in said area. We will also discuss the
different opportunities that are open to you as an acupuncturist and the type
of practice you would like to have. We will talk about the pros and cons of going
solo, joining a practice and other various opportunities.
Additional Licensing Requirements – 20 minutes
Acupuncture has become increasingly more accepted in the
medical community and by the public. Due to this many states have changed
and/or increased the licensing requirements of those applying to become state
licensed acupuncturists or practitioners of Oriental medicine. During this
lecture we will discuss many of those changes and what is required by many of
the states and by the NCCAOM in order to receive one credentials.
Your Marketability and Marketing Strategies – 30 minutes
During this lecture we will discuss the importance of a
professional portfolio. This is to include a resume, letters of recommendation
and the use of letters of introduction. We will examine the contents of each of
the above and how to use them to best market yourself and your practice. We
will discuss the various modalities available to you as an acupuncturist that
will set you apart from others in the field, which is key. We will also discuss
the various methods of advertising and getting you word out about you and your
practice.
Stating Your
Practice– 60 minutes
This lecture will help you market yourself and your skills
to other practitioners. How to market yourself to the specific practice you
wish to join. We will set up benchmarks for the initial contact and the
importance of following up in a professional manner. We will also discuss the
initial interview process and what to expect during that interview. We will discuss negotiations and contracts in
order to secure your practice.
Once you have your practice what’s next? We will discuss
what you will need at your office from the outside to the treatment rooms. What
is needed in your waiting area, reception area, and appointment desk, to your
treatment room.
Managing Your
Paperwork – 30 minutes
In this lecture we will discuss how to bill patients to
the office you have joined. What is their responsibility and what is your
responsibility. We will discuss how to keep track of your patients, bill
insurance and insurance codes. Also to be discussed is documentation required
by many of the states in order to practice.
Treatment Principles – 4.5 hours total, please see breakdown
During this
portion of the seminar we will discuss treatment principles, differentiation,
point prescriptions, point location, needling techniques and Chinese herbal
formulas to enable to you best serve the needs of your patient. We will discuss
the conditions that you are most likely to encounter and how to treat those
conditions.
Pain and Stress Management and Treatment Protocols – 3 hours 45 minutes
It has been my experience 80% of the patients I see
entails stress, acute and chronic pain conditions. Stress is the reason for
many of today’s aliments including hypertension, insomnia, digestion issues to
pain and headaches. During this lecture we will also discuss the various types
of pain and injuries you are likely to encounter in your practice that are
stress and injury related.
Stress Management – 45 minutes
During this
lecture we will discuss the various conditions that are related to stress and
how it manifests in the body. We will discuss point prescriptions, point
location, needling techniques and Chinese herbal formulas to enable to you best
serve the needs of your patient.
Headaches – 45 minutes
During this
lecture we will discuss the different types of headaches, point prescriptions,
point location, needling techniques and Chinese herbal formulas to enable to
you best serve the needs of your patient.
Back Pain – 45 minutes
During this
lecture we will discuss hip, low back, mid back and upper back pain. We will
discuss point prescriptions, point location, needling techniques and Chinese
herbal formulas to enable to you best serve the needs of your patient.
Rotator Cuff, Elbow and
Wrist Pain – 45 minutes
During this
lecture we will discuss shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand pain. We will discuss
point prescriptions, point location, needling techniques and Chinese herbal
formulas to enable to you best serve the needs of your patient.
Knee, Ankle and Foot – 45
minutes
During this lecture
we will discuss knee, ankle and foot pain. We will discuss point prescriptions,
point location, needling techniques and Chinese herbal formulas to enable to
you best serve the needs of your patient.
Weight Loss and Detox Treatment Protocols – 45 minutes
Studies have shown most adults are over weight. During
this lecture we will discuss how your patient can not only loss weight but also
how they can keep it off permanently. We will discuss the reasons one becomes
and stays over weight according to both Traditional Chinese Medicine and
Western Medical theory. We will also discuss the use of acupuncture treatment
protocols, Chinese herbal formulas, detoxification methods and nutrition for
weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
